FAQs about dental implants to replace teeth

Tooth Replacement with Dental Implant in Coppell, TX

Implants transform smiles. And this form of modern tooth replacement is also transforming how dentists like our own Dr. Brady Camp at Magnolia Park Dental in Coppell, Texas, rebuild functional, healthy teeth – for the better!

How do dental implants compare to other types of tooth replacement (like dentures)?

To begin with, implants are just one part of each replacement tooth, albeit an important and unique part, that is inserted into the jawbone. The implant is made from a special material designed to integrate with the surrounding bone and functions like a tooth root. So, a single replacement tooth or crown may be secured in the jawbone with one artificial tooth root or implant. Or, a few implants may be used to secure several missing teeth in a dental bridge or partial. Minimal implants are also placed to retain an upper or lower denture. Conventional bridges and dentures are different. They are designed to be anchored in place by either neighboring teeth (for bridges) or with natural suction in the mouth and special adhesive products (for dentures).

Why does their design matter so much?

Your natural teeth are secured in the jaw with tooth roots. So, implants are used to imitate the design of natural teeth. The closer that we can get to a natural design, the better. Artificial teeth that are held in place by “roots” support a natural feel in the mouth, as well as natural function, aesthetics, and durability.

How long do implant teeth last?

They can last a lifetime! While implants do not decay like natural teeth, the crown, bridge, or denture may be threatened by gum disease-like inflammation. This inflammation forms around the implant and can be avoided with the usual good oral hygiene, regular visits to Magnolia Park Dental for cleanings by our professional hygienists, as well as checkups/exams performed by Dr. Camp.

Will my denture need to be replaced?

Bone loss is a very real threat with traditional dentures. Since conventional dentures are not stabilized in the jaw, they do not provide the stimulation the bone needs to stay strong and healthy. When the bone shrinks and is lost, the shape of your face changes. Your denture no longer fits well. Adjustments with services like relining and rebasing can help; however, you will likely need a new denture eventually. Because implants keep the bone healthy and dense, your denture continues to fit well – no special services required!
