A missing tooth or teeth is no laughing matter. While missing teeth can ruin a beautiful smile, it can also cause other issues like shifting and leave your other teeth more vulnerable to conditions such as tooth decay and gum disease. Fortunately, at Magnolia Park Dental, Dr. Brady Camp and his team can provide you with incredible dental implants to complete your smile.
The concept of dental implants is pretty simple. They are made of two parts: a post and the restoration, which is usually a ceramic or porcelain crown. The post behaves as the bottom half of the restoration, serving as the tooth root below your gum line, while the crown is the upper part of the restoration that imitates your tooth above your gum line.
The dental post is implanted directly into your jawbone, where it will integrate with the bone during osseointegration. This process can take several months to complete, but once it’s finished, the post will have fused with your natural bone to create an incredibly strong new tooth root. During osseointegration, the doctor will fit you with a temporary crown designed to protect the post as it fuses with your jawbone.
Finally, your custom-made dental crown is placed on top of your post and cemented with a special paste that bonds to the post. The result is a stronger tooth that looks and feels completely natural.
Whenever you talk about inserting something inside your jawbone, it’s natural to assume there will be some discomfort. While this is true, during the implant procedure, we will make you as comfortable as possible by using the right local or general anesthesia to numb the area beforehand.
After the placement of your dental post, it’s likely that you will feel soreness in your gums, teeth, and jaw in the area surrounding the implant. This can be managed well with either prescription or non-prescription pain medication, and the discomfort should quickly fade within a few days to a few weeks.
One thing to keep in mind is that your temporary dental crown needs to be treated with great care, as the post would not have had the time needed to fully integrate with your jawbone. Too much pressure could cause the crown and post to shift, causing great discomfort. This is why we recommend a soft or even liquid diet at first.
Unfortunately, only people over the age of 18 are eligible to receive dental implants. Children are still growing, and as their bone structure changes, the implant could shift. Even adults around the age of 18 might not be the best candidates since their bodies might not have reached their full physical maturity.
Also, candidates with dental issues such as tooth decay and gum disease are not eligible until those conditions are resolved. If there is damaged bone tissue under the missing tooth, a bone graft might be needed to provide a better foundation for the implant.
