Can my broken tooth be “saved”?
Maybe! We will not know for sure until after Dr. Brady Camp takes a look inside of your mouth. Some fractures and injuries may be repaired with dental restorations like crowns. Or, if the injury has penetrated the innermost tooth structure, root canal therapy may be what Dr. Camp orders to prevent an extraction (removal of the tooth).
Are crowns just for broken teeth?
No. Crowns are incredibly versatile. Made from tooth-like materials (such as porcelain), they are designed to cover the entire portion of the tooth visible above the gum line. They can be used to strengthen teeth that are weak due to cracks and decay. They may also be appropriate for big cosmetic cases, such as covering up a severely discolored or oddly shaped tooth. Lastly, they are used to replace teeth (as part of a dental bridge and dental implants).
How do bridges work?
As their name suggests, dental bridges are designed to “bridge” or close the gaps created by tooth loss. They are essentially a permanent option for tooth replacement. Crowns strengthen the anchor teeth, which hold up the dental bridge, which also includes at least one artificial tooth. The bridge is cemented to the neighboring anchor teeth to fill the empty space effectively.
What are some other ways to replace teeth?
You are in luck with today’s many options for tooth replacement. Dr. Camp is happy to discuss “conventional” partial and complete dentures as needed. Modern dentures fit very well and are made from premium materials. Our patients at Magnolia Park Dental also have alternatives to these dentures in the form of crowns, bridges, and appliances retained by dental implants.
How do implants “work”?
The implant part of the replacement tooth functions like a root. A crown is attached to this artificial tooth root after it has been secured in the jawbone. Many benefits flow from this unique design. The teeth are not going anywhere – they are stabilized by the jaw with the implant. No denture adhesive is needed. Since the new teeth do not depend on suction in the mouth (like conventional dentures), they continue to fit well without needing additional denture services, such as relining and rebasing. They also keep the supportive bone in the jaw strong. A healthy jawbone maintains your beautiful facial structure and supports good chewing function and clear speech for a lifetime with good care.
