A couple smiling at each other

Dental veneers are a truly remarkable cosmetic dentistry procedure that has made it possible to quickly and affordably create the smile of your dreams. A dental veneer is a thin composite or porcelain “cap” that is affixed to a tooth. Dental Veneers are popular for covering gaps, discolored teeth, a misshapen tooth, or a damaged tooth. The results are truly stunning.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, because a thin layer of your tooth’s enamel has to be removed to make room for your new veneer, this treatment should be considered permanent. A layer of enamel ranging from 0.1-0.5 cm has to be removed so that, once your veneer is placed, it will not look oversized and unnatural. A veneer can be removed, but your tooth’s enamel will never grow back, so your tooth will not look visually pleasing until a new veneer is put in place. A very durable veneer will eventually need to be replaced after many years. If your veneer cracks or breaks before that, it can be replaced.

One reason veneers are a popular cosmetic solution is their ability to be completely customized. This includes shade. Your veneer will be shaded and shaped to match the appearance of your natural teeth. Some patients will get their teeth whitened prior to getting the new veneer. This is important to do before getting any veneer because your veneer will not be receptive to teeth whitening treatments. This means that if your teeth are whitened after getting a veneer, the veneer will remain its previous shade, while the rest of your teeth will be a brighter, whiter shade.

The porcelain used to craft your new veneer is quite strong. Being strong and being invincible is quite different, though, so you will want to take care of your veneer so it does not crack or break. Refraining from certain actions, including chewing on ice, hard candy, and other hard objects like a pen cap, is recommended. In reality, these actions are not recommended with your natural teeth either. For the most part, there are no other dietary restrictions. You may also want to avoid overly sticky foods like caramel apples, which could pull the veneer off.

Getting veneers is a multi-appointment process. Typically, it requires just two appointments. During your first appointment, any imaging and molds will be created and sent to the offsite lab, where your veneers will be made. Your teeth will be prepared and temporary veneers put into place. When you return for your veneers, the temporary veneers will be removed, and your permanent veneers will be put into place.

Removing a thin layer of enamel is required to prepare your new veneers. This step is required to allow your new veneers to blend in with your other teeth. Without removing this enamel layer, your veneers would look bulky and unattractive. Because your enamel needs to be removed, you must be ready to have veneers for the remainder of your life or as long as you retain your natural teeth.
